01 / KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Umbrel is the platform.
The hardware is your choice.

umbrelOS is the operating system: a browser-based home server platform with an app store. Bitcoin Node validates the blockchain; Lightning Node, powered by LND, adds Lightning payments.

Umbrel Home and Umbrel Pro are purpose-built devices with umbrelOS pre-installed. You can also install umbrelOS on supported hardware of your own. The box alone does not provide a funded Lightning wallet or receiving liquidity.

02 / CHOOSE YOUR FOUNDATION

One purpose.
Three ways to begin.

THE READY-MADE START

Umbrel Home

A compact, preconfigured device for people who want a straightforward route into running their own server.

  • Intel N150, quad-core processor
  • 16GB RAM
  • 1TB, 2TB or 4TB NVMe SSD options
  • Gigabit Ethernet

For a new unpruned Bitcoin and Lightning setup, we suggest considering 2TB or more for growth. This is our planning recommendation, not an Umbrel minimum.

ROOM TO EXPAND

Umbrel Pro

More processing power, faster networking and flexible storage for a larger self-hosting setup.

  • Intel Core i3-N300, eight cores
  • 16GB RAM and 2.5GbE Ethernet
  • Four M.2 NVMe slots, up to 32TB raw storage
  • FailSafe storage with two or more drives

Check whether SSDs are included in your order. Redundancy reduces usable capacity and does not replace backups. Pro hardware alone does not improve your receiving liquidity.

BRING YOUR OWN HARDWARE

umbrelOS on your device

Use a supported mini PC, computer or other compatible device when you want more control over the hardware.

  • Check the current installation guide
  • Allow SSD capacity for chain growth
  • Plan reliable cooling and power
  • Confirm network and storage compatibility

Hardware faults remain the responsibility of your device manufacturer. Installation may erase drives, so keep a separate copy of anything you need.

Specifications checked against Umbrel’s official pages on 16 October 2026. Older hardware generations differ. Confirm the exact model, storage, price, UK delivery and warranty before ordering. Sovereign Light Node is an independent service concept; no Umbrel affiliation is claimed.

03 / THE ESSENTIALS

The box is only
part of the setup.

01 / HARDWARE

Reliable storage & power

A suitable device, SSD, correct power supply and clear airflow. Consider a UPS for the node and router, with a safe shutdown plan.

02 / CONNECTION

A dependable network

Use wired Ethernet where possible. Allow for the initial blockchain download and ongoing traffic. Check broadband data limits and plan to keep the node online.

03 / ACCESS

Your own admin device

A phone or computer on the same local network, a strong unique password and a password manager. Keep the admin interface off the public internet.

04 / RECOVERY

Backups you understand

Store the Lightning recovery seed offline and protect current channel backups separately. Follow the app’s recovery procedure; a seed alone is not a complete Lightning recovery plan.

05 / BITCOIN

A separate channel budget

Allow bitcoin for channel funding and on-chain fees, separate from hardware and service costs. Start with a small amount while you learn how your setup behaves.

06 / RECEIVING

Inbound liquidity

Your own funded channel normally gives you spending capacity. Receiving needs balance on the peer’s side and a usable payment route. Plan inbound liquidity around expected sales.

04 / SETUP IN PRACTICE

From unboxing
to a test payment.

Move through each stage before relying on the node for customer payments. Initial blockchain synchronisation can take days or longer, depending on your hardware and connection.

  1. Prepare your device

For Home, connect the supplied Ethernet cable and power. For Pro, install compatible SSDs first, following the official guide. Storage configuration can erase existing SSD data.

  2. Open umbrelOS locally

On the same network, visit http://umbrel.local, create your account and save the password securely. Use your router’s device list if the local hostname does not resolve.

  3. Install Bitcoin Node and let it sync

Use the Umbrel App Store. For this Lightning setup, plan for a fully synced, unpruned Bitcoin backend unless you have confirmed your exact configuration supports an alternative.

  4. Install Lightning Node and secure recovery

Create the wallet, record its seed privately and check the channel backup process before funding it. Never share your seed with a setup provider.

  5. Arrange channels and receiving capacity

Choose suitable peers, allow for fees and agree an inbound liquidity plan. Hardware capacity and channel receiving capacity are separate things.

  6. Connect your checkout and test

Configure the merchant tools for your chosen flow, such as BTCPay Server. Test a small invoice, payment confirmation and refund process before accepting live sales.

Already running a Lightning node?

Do not start a second copy of the same live node or restore an old channel database as a routine migration. Plan the move carefully using the current app-specific guidance.

05 / BEFORE YOU BUY

A few practical
answers.

Do I need Umbrel Pro to accept Lightning?

No. Pro’s additional storage and performance may help with a broader self-hosting workload. A suitable Home or compatible DIY device can be a starting point. Payment reliability also depends on connectivity, software, channel liquidity and peers.

Is 1TB enough?

Do not buy based only on today’s blockchain size. An unpruned node needs room for the chain, indexes, apps and future growth. Our starting recommendation is to consider 2TB or more, then check your exact app and storage needs.

Does FailSafe protect my Lightning funds?

Storage redundancy can help with a drive failure, but it cannot replace Lightning recovery planning. Keep the seed and current channel backups protected, and follow LND’s recovery instructions. Do not assume a general system snapshot is safe to restore over active channels.

Will the node earn an income?

There is no guaranteed routing income. A merchant node’s main purpose is to support your payments. Channels commit capital and can create fees and maintenance work.

What can Sovereign Light Node help with?

The proposed service covers hardware planning, node setup, checkout integration, inbound liquidity planning and ongoing support. Confirm the scope and costs before work begins. You retain your keys and recovery material.
